The dark side of creativity

Stories of movie stars and rock stars self medicating themselves into oblivion, chefs and doctors suiciding, and designers burning out are common in the news. There’s an aspect of creativity that isn’t all sweetness and light. Some of the brightest and best end up hurting themselves or taking their lives, and end up breaking the hearts of the people who love them the most. And there’s always that lingering question: “Why? They had everything going for them, they had everything to live for.”

The dark side of creativity refers to the potentially negative aspects or consequences that can arise from the creative process or creative individuals.

While creativity is celebrated and valued, there are several aspects that can be problematic or detrimental:

  • Self-destructive tendencies: Creative individuals may be prone to mental health issues such as depression or anxiety, and may resort to substance abuse or other self-destructive behaviours as a means of coping or finding inspiration.
  • Isolation and alienation: The creative process can be a solitary one, and creative individuals may often feel isolated or disconnected from others. It can lead to a sense of alienation from society and difficulties in forming deep and meaningful connections with others.
  • Sensitivity and vulnerability: Creativity often stems from a heightened sense of sensitivity and emotional vulnerability. This can make creative individuals more prone to feeling criticism, rejection, and feelings of inadequacy, leading to low self-esteem or avoidance of creative pursuits.
  • Excessive perfectionism: In pursuit of creating something truly unique and exceptional, creative individuals may develop excessive perfectionism. This can lead to constant dissatisfaction with their work, self-doubt, and an inability to complete projects or move on to new ones.
  • Ethical dilemmas: Creativity can sometimes push the boundaries of societal norms and values, raising ethical dilemmas. For example, artists might tackle controversial or taboo subjects, leading to potential backlash or conflict.
  • Unpredictability and instability: Creative individuals often face an unpredictable and unstable lifestyle, particularly those in art, music, writing, or other creative professions. This can be due to irregular income, lack of job security, and uncertainty about the future.
  • Manipulative tendencies: Creativity can be a powerful tool for persuasion and manipulation. Some creative individuals may use their talents to manipulate and exploit others, whether through advertising, propaganda, or other means.

It’s important to note that not all creative individuals experience or exhibit these negative aspects, and many find ways to navigate and overcome these challenges. However, it is crucial to acknowledge and address the dark side of creativity to ensure the well-being and ethical practice of creative individuals.
